Building the sand sculpture of your dreams takes some basic tools and equipment.  Here’s a suggested list, with estimated quantities needed for a sculpting team:

  • Safety glasses to protect eyes: 1 pair per person
  • Sturdy gloves: 1 pair per person
  • A variety of brushes for finish detail work: 5-10 brushes
  • A large plastic tarp: for construction of a water reservoir
  • A metal garden rake: for moving and detailing sand
  • Five gallon buckets: 10-20 for carrying water to the sculpture
  • Smaller buckets (kid size): 5-10 for transporting water
  • Caulking spoon and trowels: 2-3 for finish detail work
  • A concrete rake: for moving and smoothing sand
  • Standard round or square point shovel – 5-10 for digging
  • Smaller kid size shovels: 3-5 for digging
  • Spray bottles: 5-10 for detailing and stabilizing work areas
  • Garden trowels: 4-8 for detailing
  • Concrete floats (wood): 4-8 for detailing
  • Joint compound knives: 4-8 for detailing
  • Plastic putty knives: 2-3 for detailing
  • Easyup tent with stakes or tie-downs: shade or weather protection
  • Folding lawn chairs: for taking a break from the hard work
